The Stainless Steel Grid Insert is an open-grid stainless steel shelf panel designed for use in the Big Green Egg Modular Nest System. It fills a module position in an EGG Frame or Expansion Frame to provide a ventilated storage or counter surface. Made from 304-grade stainless steel, the grid insert is corrosion-resistant, durable in outdoor conditions, and standardized to the same outer dimensions as all other Modular Nest inserts, making it interchangeable with acacia wood and solid stainless steel inserts in any position throughout the station. The insert can be placed right-side up or inverted, depending on the items being stored or the surface texture desired.

304-Grade Stainless Steel Construction

The grid insert is fabricated from 304-grade stainless steel, which is the standard food-safe stainless steel alloy used in professional kitchen equipment. Grade 304 stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance in outdoor environments, including resistance to moisture, humidity, and the trace acidic exposure that comes from proximity to cooking and food preparation. The grid insert does not require any surface treatment or maintenance to maintain its corrosion resistance, and it can be cleaned with standard outdoor kitchen cleaners or simply rinsed with water between uses.

Right-Side Up or Inverted Placement

The Stainless Steel Grid Insert can be placed in the frame either right-side up or inverted. The right-side up orientation presents the grid surface upward, which is the standard storage position for accessories and charcoal. The inverted orientation flips the grid so the reverse face is upward, which provides a slightly different surface texture and makes it easier to slide flat items like baking stones and convEGGtors on and off the shelf without catching on the grid wires. Big Green Egg recommends the inverted orientation specifically for lower shelf positions where convEGGtors and cooking grids are stored, because it reduces the friction that these items encounter when being slid into and out of the storage position.

Standardized Dimensions and Interchangeability

The Stainless Steel Grid Insert shares the same outer dimensions as all other Modular Nest System inserts. This standardization allows the grid insert to be placed in any upper or lower frame position in any EGG Frame or Expansion Frame module in the system without modification. It can be swapped for an acacia wood insert or a solid stainless steel insert at any time by simply lifting the insert out of its frame position and placing the replacement insert in. The interchangeable insert system is the core of what makes the Modular Nest configurable and adaptable over time.

Upper and Lower Position Use

In the upper counter position of an Expansion Frame or EGG Frame, the Stainless Steel Grid Insert provides a ventilated work surface that allows air to circulate around items placed on it and small spills to pass through rather than pooling. In the lower shelf position, the grid insert provides ventilated storage for accessories, charcoal bags, and other items while allowing the space below to breathe. Many Modular Nest owners use the stainless grid insert in lower shelf positions throughout the station for accessory storage and reserve acacia or solid stainless inserts for upper counter surfaces where food preparation takes place.
